RESCHOOL Reveals – The Power of Energy Communities

Hammarby Sjöstad in Stockholm is Sweden’s first energy community, established in 2023 as a pioneering model of sustainable urban living. Initiated by a collaboration between the City of Stockholm, local businesses, and academic institutions, the project involves nine housing cooperatives, with hopes to eventually include over 20,000 residents. The community focuses on utilising renewable energy sources such as solar panels, battery storage and virtual electricity sharing, though current Swedish legislation poses challenges to this vision. Supported by the European RESCHOOL project, Hammarby Sjöstad is working to standardise data and develop a smart grid, aiming to improve energy efficiency and resident engagement through tools like the Local Life app. This initiative empowers residents to participate in the energy transition while striving to make Hammarby Sjöstad climate-positive by 2030, serving as an example of innovation, community collaboration, and sustainable urban development.
